Where Did The Poker Game Originate…

The origins of poker are highly disputed and no one knows for sure when and where the game originated and who the creator of it was. The most accepted theory is that it was first created in the mid to late 1800s on the gambling boats that were very popular on the Mississippi River in the United States at the time. The game slowly spread from there and in a few short years was being played throughout the United States and in other countries. Over the years, the game evolved and many different types of poker were created, such as stud, lowball, split-pot, and draw card.

Since its creation, poker has always been a popular card game however, in the 1970s, it increased in popularity significantly due to the introduction of the World Series of Poker Tournament. Due to the swell in popularity, casinos and gambling houses increased their poker tables and offered poker tournaments. The 1970s, also saw the first poker books hit the market. These books offered readers insights into the game, and poker strategies and tips to be a big winner. By the end of the 1970s, games of poker were frequently seen on television and in the movies.

By the 1990s, games of poker were found in almost every casino around the world, and in 1998, the very first online poker site where players could win and lose real money was created by Planet Poker. In 1999, the U.K site, Late Night Poker was started.

The popularity of poker rose to unprecedented heights in the 2000’s. Between the multitude of online poker sites and the invention of the hand held camera for poker players, everyone could enjoy the game, from amateurs to professionals to spectators. Network television started airing the large poker tournaments, giving fans a chance to watch the game from the comfort of their own homes.

Today, poker is the most popular card game in the world and is played on an international level. Where just a few hundred people entered poker tournaments twenty years ago, today, thousands enter. The very best poker players in the world can literally make millions annually. The most successful poker player of all time is Antonio Esfandiari from the United States; by the end of 2012 he made more than 23 million dollars playing the game. However, most people do not play poker to get rich, they simply play for fun and for the thrill of the game.
